Supporting Baby’s Brain Development

You may listen to the teleseminar by clicking on the link below, or you can download and listen later by right-clicking and selecting “save target as” in the window that appears.

MP3 (33 minutes)

This teleseminar focuses on what you can do to help ensure optimal brain development in your baby, especially during the third trimester when brain growth is at its peak.

You’ve probably heard about the importance of breastfeeding (and DHA and ARA in infant formula) for better mental and visual development in babies, but did you know that you can take steps during pregnancy that will help your baby’s brain develop optimally?

Nick, thanks for the teleseminar, it was very informative. where can I get flax seed and brazil nuts easily? I never go to east end, it is too inconvenient. is there a good place online I could order stuff? How do I use the freshly grounds flax seed?

also, is there a good way to increase milk production for nursing?

You can buy brazil nuts in bulk at: http://www.bulkfoods.com/searchnutriresult.asp?sProdID=12174

You can buy flax at the same place: http://www.bulkfoods.com/searchnutriresult.asp?sProdID=16094

The store also has other package sizes than the ones linked above.

Freshly ground flax seeds can be sprinkled on cereal, mixed in with your morning smoothie, mixed in with homemade bread, put in oatmeal, sprinkled over yogurt, baked into muffins, baked into cookies, made into granola bars, etc. It’s really pretty versatile! Just add roughly 2 tablespoons for every 2 cups of “stuff” you’re putting it into. How much you add is determined mostly by how much you can get without adversely affecting the flavor of what you’re adding it to.

I’ll respond to the milk production question in a separate post.

It is possible to overload on selenium if you eat a lot of brazil nuts. Eating a couple brazil nuts every day long term is fine, but avoid eating more than that long term! Selenium is great, but like many other things, too much can be bad.
